When we first reported on the Swole Doge Vs. Cheems memes we'd be seeing around, we had no idea they'd have such an impressive longevity. The format gained popularity in mid-May, and almost a month later it's still going strong. It definitely helps that the template is so versatile. Well would you look at that, right in the thick of the coronavirus pandemic, we might have ourselves a new disease on the rise! This one's called hantavirus and it originated in China. But before you freak out, just keep in mind that researchers think that this particular disease can only be spread via direct contact with infected rodents, not by human contact.

The Wuhan Coronavirus claimed its 81st victim today in the Heinan province of China, where the illness has sickened nearly 2,500 people. The SARS-like disease has spread to twelve countries - with five confirmed cases in the United States. The rampant nature of the virus has inspired a lot of health-related anxiety all over the world - with many people making memes about their fears. We've seen a lot of good ones on r/dankmemes, our favorite corner of Reddit, and are happy to present you with the best of the bunch. If the Coronavirus keeps spreading, we can definitely expect to see more where these came from.

The internet was rich with 2020 plague memes around the new year, and with the news of the deadly Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak, memers are back to the meme drawing board. So, Photoshop. The virus has already sickened hundreds and claimed six lives in China - but the news of the first case in the United States is causing some anxiety. While it's being said that the risk to the public is low, comedy flourishes in times of tension, and the memes are proving to be unstoppable. And that's all good - it's better to laugh at fear than succumb to it. 

It turns out that Chinese President Xi Xinping really hates being compared to a cute little children's cartoon. 

If you've been on the internet in the past two days, then you've probably seen the plethora of memes mocking Xi Xinping for supposedly resembling Winnie the Pooh. 

The mockery began all the way back in the summer of 2017 and has escalated to the point that the president decided to ban all caricatures of Winnie the Pooh in China because he hates the comparison that much. 

This of course has only escalated the meme-age and criticism of the Chinese government's censorship tendency.

China has censored beloved American cartoon show South Park and the internet is pissed, to say the least. The episode that sparked the whole controversy, entitled "Band in China," critiqued the notion that American content tends to pander to Chinese censorship laws.

In response to the episode, the Chinese government banned all South Park content. (Can you spot the irony here?)

The show's creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, responded in the most South Park-esque way that they possible could've, with a total non-apology (which you can read below).

The drama of Lord of the Rings has always lent itself well to dank memery, and we're happy to report that this format featuring the villainous Saruman is making a bit of a comeback on Reddit. The scene being used is from The Fellowship Of The Ring, a moment in which Saruman offers Gandalf a choice between joining him or dying. Gandalf refuses to help Saruman, who remarks "So you have chosen death." The foreboding line is generally being used in much lighter contexts - think family quibbles and "things i don't like" style memes. They're pretty good, and we're happy to see the format is alive and well.

We're all familiar with the story of Mulan from the classic '90s Disney movie, but what you probably didn't know is the lesser-known tale of Captain Li Shang questioning his sexuality. Being the '90s and all, people weren't as comfortable talking about different sexual orientations as we are now, but the story is finally coming out of the closet! (sorry.)
