Elders Of Cyberspace Reminisce About The Early Internet Days

Depending on the generation you belong to, the way you think about the internet might significantly differ from someone much older or younger than you. One (presumably young) redditor asked the 'elders' of Reddit to explain the meaning of slang from the early internet days of yore. Not only did veterans of the net get into archaic terminology, they reminisced about messenger platforms like AIM and ICQ, illegally downloading songs, emoticons, forums and funny chat room dynamics. You can't help but detect a tinge of wistfulness in each response, even when one redditor recounts the traumatic experience of seeing 'goatse' for the first time. Keep scrolling for some amusing highlights from the thread.

Columnist Demolished By Twitter For Op-ed About Millennials

The oldest millennials are about to be 40 and the media is still somehow telling the entire generation to 'grow the eff up'—a tall order in the midst of constant ecological, financial and health crises. Not to mention war, unemployment, non-existent job security, housing market collapse, student debt, and on and on and on. Yesterday, journalist Jennifer Rosner got dragged by Twitter after the Chicago Tribune plugged her op-ed piece about millennials. When you read the article itself however, it becomes clear that the Chicago Tribune's tweet was a bit misleading. The post that riled up thousands of millennials read, 'writer Jennifer Rosner predicts COVID-19 lockdowns will force easy-breezy millennials to grow up.' In the actual op-ed, Rosner covers her ass by framing the various criticisms of millennials as her boomer dad's opinions. She simply suggests that the pandemic may have something to do with her fellow millennials suddenly embracing a more suburban sort of life that her father's generation might approve of. In any case, the Tribune's tweet was more than enough to hit a nerve. We've collected some of the spiciest roasts from before the controversial tweet got deleted.

Nostalgic Thread Reveals What Gen Z Kids Wouldn’t Get About The 90s

As the subject of endless rose-tinted memes over the years, there's nothing certain parts of social media enjoy more than reminiscing on being a 90s kid. Gen Z kids might enjoy borrowing some of its fashion, TV and music, but they will never understand the unique benefits and challenges of a which they often use for their grab bag of cultural references. What may have seemed like vintage novelties only a few short years ago could be considered bona fide relics by teens nowadays; or at least that's the theory proposed by Twitter user @aklingus. Asking people about what nineties trends they could think of that would be hard to explain to someone born after the year 2000, he was inundated with replies.

Being one of the last generations to remember a time before the internet ruled our lives, the particular flavor of 90s kid nostalgia can fascinate geriatric millennials and born-in-1999 posers alike. If there's one thing that we can take away from everyone's responses to this tweet, we will probably never see the likes of the decade's creatively rampant consumerism again.

15 Hilariously Dismal Tweets That Really Sum Up The Millennial Experience

Generation Y gets a lot of sh*t constantly for supposedly being lazy, entitled and easily offended. Are these things actually true? The answer to that is of course subjective, but if you're a Millennial then you'll know that stereotypes about us tend to be a bit (or a lot) overplayed, and these tweets make light of that.

15+ Memes For Geriatric Millennials

It's true that there are some benefits to getting older. You are your own master. That means you can eat fried chicken for breakfast if you want to, or chocolate cake for dinner. You can go out with friends without having to answer to anyone. Gaming? Nobody cares if you sit at your PC for 10 hours eating only Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew.

Unfortunately there are also some pretty shitty aspects of aging. That metabolism isn't getting any faster. That fried chicken breakfast and cake dinner are starting to show up in some weird places. Going to work, paying bills and rent sucks balls. And then there's the hangovers. The worst part, however, is feeling absolutely geriatric when young people talk about TikTok or new music that sounds alien to aging ears. Or, ya know, having the tunes you listened to in high school referred to as "oldies." While we may not be on death's door, it sure is starting to feel like we should be investing in a coffin or a funeral plot. We're not alone in this plight. There are loads of memes about the pains of realizing you're getting old. We've put a sadly relatable collection together. Here's hoping you don't feel so ancient that you can't appreciate them.

Us early '90s kids are positively freaking out right now about the fact that we're closing in on the 2010s decade and the '90s will have been nearly 30 years ago for many of us. Time really does seem to fly by faster the older you get.

30 Nostalgic Memes Only Some People Will Get

As an aging millennial it's easy to find myself yearning for simpler times. While yes, dial-up was technically the internet, it was very hard to find yourself glued to a screen for 14 hours of the day. New music was something you read about in a magazine or stumbled upon at a brick and mortar record store. Blockbuster was thriving. We could wax nostalgic for days (what is a day, even?) but we'll save our breath and let these memes take you down memory lane instead.

The Generational Meme Redux Of 'My Parents In Their 30s'

In case the internet's long term anti-boomer crusade hasn't made it clear enough, younger generations haven't had it so great for a while. Between rising living costs, stagnant wages and a society hellbent on making things harder for the little guy, it can be easy to look at coming of age a few decades earlier with rose-tinted glasses.

This is an attitude that has been expressed repeatedly in memes, most notably last year when the 'My Parents At Age 29' format humorously compared the life paths of millennials and their parents with a Wojak comic. In fact, it was so popular that it has recently experienced a remix in the form of the 'My Parents In Their 30s' meme.

While the two reflect on similar themes, there are some key changes. Where the older meme focused more on the varying maturity levels between generations, the revamp underlines the large material differences. This time around, 'My Parents In My 30s' is there to remind you that no, you are not getting on the property ladder any time soon. The original setup may not be that believable (how many people have parents that own a second home?), but the anxiety behind it still stands. Nothing says relatability like going into debt with your grocery shop.

Millennials Discuss The Most Annoying Stereotypes About Their Generation

For the past several years, the media has dubbed Millennials the lazy, entitled, 'snowflake' generation who go around killing entire industries with their discriminating taste. Despite the fact that Millennials are now between the ages of 25 and 40, they still get blamed for things like Covid-19 super-spreader events on college campuses. With how generously the term gets used as a general pejorative, you'd think 'Millennial' could just mean 'youngish person who I don't like.' Well many are sick and tired of taking crap from out-of-touch people who seem to consider their own generation to be completely blameless. One redditor asked the internet to vent about the most annoying stereotypes about Millennials they've heard, and the replies are pretty spicy. If you're a disgruntled Millennial who's over all the slander, these top responses from the Reddit thread will probably resonate with you.

Relatable Memes For Aging Millenials And Xennials

As an aging millennial, it can be hard to accept that the references you once enjoyed are not considered relevant by the TikTok-loving generation that followed ours. When Dustin Diamond (Screech) died, they did not mourn. Nor did they have to endure the agonizing impediment of a slow dial-up connection - or your mother forcing you to sign off because she needs to talk to her friends. They can't remember our painstakingly designed AIM away messages, or (yikes) waiting in line to buy HARRY POTTER books at a REAL bookstore. But at least we have each other. And memes that remind us of the good (and bad) days of yore.

25 Plant Memes For Green And Black Thumbs Alike

This year's endless joy of lockdowns and quarantines has inspired many home-based trends. While some people took up baking bread and gaining that quarantine fifteen, other people turned to knitting or art. And then there's the scads of millenials and Zoomers who decided to cultivate the ol' houseplant and gardening fad that had been steadily growing over the last few years. And who can blame them? If you're going to be stuck inside, it makes sense to want your space to look green and your air to flow more fresh. From these plant memes it's clear the obsession has reached financially irresponsible levels, there are definitely worse ways to spend your time and money than caring for a living thing. Especially when you don't have to walk plants or change their litterbox.

30 Times Millennials Were Blamed For Ruining Everything

Blaming Millennials for killing industries is one of the most cherished pastimes of Gen Xers and Boomers. We saw a flurry of accusatory think-pieces and headlines several years ago when Millennials first started entering the workforce, but even in 2020 the finger-pointing hasn't really let up. Hey, here's a thought: maybe it's the economy that killed Millennials and not the other way around. Maybe industries are dying because Millennials are too goddamn poor to buy anything. But ok boomer, keep on believing we spontaneously decided as an entire generation to kill industries because we're evil. That sounds much more logical.

r/DeathByMillennial is a goldmine of out of touch headlines and commentary that lazily condemn a single cohort of people who didn't even ask to be born, rather than an economic system that has failed millions of workers. We've collected some of the cringiest posts for our fellow Millennials to scoff at.
