Some of the tricks employed by this demonically swift n speedy gamer to achieve the new record:

  • Breaking his own legs to gain speed. This works by saving and quickloading just before crippling your character; if done correctly the game grants you a 152% speedboost.
  • Playing the game in Italian, as it is quicker than the English voice acting.
  • Skipping NPC dialogue via quicksaves.
  • Clipping through walls using quicksaves—Kungkobra notes that “wall collision is kinda dodgy in this game.”
  • Freezing enemies. As Kungkobra explains it, if you bring up the map screen and then place a custom marker fast enough, the process will halt enemies around you. This is how he blazes past difficult enemies—the speedrun is a lot of literal running through the wasteland.

Someone beat Spelunky in one minute and 40 seconds.

In this insane run, you can watch Spelunky God set a world record, blasting his way through the entire game in only 101 seconds. He steals the compass, jet pack and teleporter early on and makes great use of it.

Polygon spoke to game designer Douglas Wilson about the success:

Here's the thing about a run like this, you can't just decide to do it. A big reason this was possible is the fact that Spelunky God was given an amazing "seed," the starting conditions of the randomly assigned levels and item placement. There's an impressive amount of skill at play, but it wouldn't matter unless the seed was optimal.

"Nearly everything about this seed was fantastic!" the video's description states. "Incredible start, great jungle, great Ice Caves, good enough Temple."

This is important, as it would be impossible to compete with this run without a similar seed. "In order to even compete for a top Any% time, the runner needs a very particular random seed — a 1-2 shop w/ a teleporter and compass (and jetpack)," Wilson said. "The compass tells you where the exit is, so saves you time searching."

Spelunky just lends itself to fascinating videos, like the Hell speedrun and the solo eggplant run.
