'I Made A New Friend' Memes Are A Solid Mix Of Donnie Darko And Self-Deprecation

2001's Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, has been making a bit of a comeback on the internet this year. We're not sure if it's due to millennial nostalgia/escapism or because the psychological thriller kind of reflects the puzzling insanity of 2020. In the last couple months, one format in particular has been popping up all over Instagram and Reddit. It's from a scene in which Donnie Darko (Gyllenhaal) tells his psychiatrist, Dr. Thurman, about a new friend he's made. Thurman asks if the friend is real or imaginary, and Donnie confirms that the friend does not actually exist.

It's a sad moment, and it's no wonder that the memes it's inspired are pretty self-deprecating and depressing. They mostly riff on how difficult it is to make a real connection in this world - but some of them focus on how futile it is to try to make it as a musician. Others are just straight up shitposts about poopoo or peepee. This gallery boasts all of the above, and more. At the end of the day, these memes just make us yearn to go out into the real world and make friends like we used to. Hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

'Avengers Level Threat' Memes Mock Dramatic Responses To Nonexistant Threats

The latest Marvel meme to hit our screens is ripped from Spider-Man: Far From Home and features the handsome mug of Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio. The character appears wide-eyed and is uttering the line "Now this is an Avengers level threat." As one can imagine, the meme is used to describe situations that are the opposite of dire, like, say, the existence of sand in the mind of Anakin Skywalker. Or an "armed" man with no legs and no hands. The meme is simple, but it's still inspiring some light chuckles.

Please, oh please, let this be better than Prince of Persia. Still not really sure what that was all about... Anyways, yes, an exclusive report from Variety reports that the film based on The Division is in development under Ubisoft's film branch, Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

The report goes on to state that the upcoming Division film adaptation will star Jake Gyllenhaal, who is additionally attached to the project as a producer. Who knows, maybe Gyllenhaal loves the sh*t out of Division.
